Topical facts and figures
The building of the Defence establishment is a project on a truly grand scale. For those familiar with construction, the parameters of a net construction cost of over £200,000,000 and a gross internal floor area of 43,000m2 (almost 500,000 ft2) will speak for themselves. For those who are less familiar with the industry the following will illustrate the scale of what is being built:
All construction projects have aspects which are unique, but the building of the Defence establishment will present challenges which have not previously been faced. As a purpose built rehabilitation centre for all three British Armed Forces, the Defence establishment must be in every sense a military establishment, with all the traditions and established requirements that follow from that. But it must also be a thoroughly modern healthcare facility, built to meet exacting standards and fit for the 21st century which is certain to see huge advances in both medical technology and clinical practice in trauma rehabilitation. The Defence establishment will be a bespoke facility, diverse in its functions and its design, and the only one of its kind.
As the main contractor, Interserve are engaging a construction team, bespoke to this project, drawing on the expertise and resources of more than 100 different subcontract companies with a diverse range of specialist construction skills. Construction labour levels on site will increase as work progresses, reaching a maximum of 1,000 men and women.
